NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS AGAINTS ARMENIA FILED TO EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS INCREASES, 597 LAWSUITS FILED IN 2007

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 20, NOYAN TAPAN. 983 lawsuits were filed against
Armenia, including 597 lawsuits in 2007 – in the period of April 26,
1992 (when Armenia joined the European Convention on Human Rights)
to December 15, 2007. The representative of the Armenian government
in the European Court of Human Rights, deputy minister of justice
Gevorg Kostanian said at the December 19 press conference that some
of these lawsuits (243) were recongnized as unacceptable. Out of the
lawsuits filed this year, 40 ones were recognized as unacceptable,
4 were accepted, 4 were "taken off the list of cases", i.e. were
quashed. 12 lawsuits against Armenia are related to administrative
infringements, 13 are criminal cases and 32 are civil ones.
According to G. Kostanian, so far the European Court of Human Rights
has made 4 rulings against Armenia, 9 rulings against Georgia, and
6 rulings and about 20 decisions against Azerbaijan.
G. Kostanian said that Armenia is obliged to pay compensation of 3,000
euros by the case "Galstian against the Republic of Armenia". Armenian
has already paid compensation of 4,000 euros by the case "Misha
Harutyunian against Armenia".
