YEREVAN, JANUARY 10, NOYAN TAPAN. The list of names of Armenia’s
highways was approved at the January 10 sitting of the Armenian
government. The RA minister of transport and communication Andranik
Manukian told reporters after the sitting that by the decision, status
of roads of marz (province) and village importance of the total length
of about 2,224 km has been changed, and these roads will be considered
roads of republican importance.
These are road sections which are being reconstructed under a number
of programs and which directly link to highways. Henceforth their
servicing, maintenance and operation will be done by the RA ministry
of transport and communication instead of regional municipalities
or communities.
A. Manukian said that the road network of Armenia currently makes
7,704 km, 1,561 km of which are roads of interstate importance,
1,831 km – roads of republican importance and 4,357 km are roads of
marz and local importance.
According to the minister, highways of interstate importance have been
mainly restored, half of the roads of republican importance have been
repaired, while marz and rural roads have not been repaired yet. Rural
roads of the total length of 103 km will be repaired with 5.6 bln
drams (about 18.3 mln USD) allocated from the state budget with this
aim. Besides, this year rural roads of 273 km will be restored under
the Millennium Challenge Program, rural roads of 107 km – with funds
provided by the Asian Development Bank. Negotiations are underway
with a Japanese bank: it is envisaged to receive 136 mln dollars to
repair rural roads of 880 km.
It was stated that it is envisaged to repair all highways of Armenia
and bring road lines into accordance with international standards
by 2012.
