OSCE observers start monitoring of election campaign in Armenia

YEREVAN Jan 10

The observer mission of the OSHR (Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human
Rights) has started long-term monitoring in Armenia, Ambassador
Geert-Hinrich Ahrens, the head of the mission, said at a press
conference.

"Currently, there are eleven main experts of the mission in Yerevan
-law and media analysts and election specialists. From January 15 we
will be joined by 28 long-term observers who will perform their
mission throughout the country as members of 14 groups," he said.

Immediately before the election, 250 short-term observers will arrive
in Armenia to monitor the opening of polling stations, voting, count
of ballots and summarizing the results, Ahrens said.

The presidential election in Armenia is due on February 19, 2008. kk
