EU’s consent needed to declare independence of Kosovo, says Slovenian
ambassador

Kyiv January 15

Slovenian Ambassador to Ukraine Primoz Seligo has said that consent
of the European Union is required to declare the independence of
Kosovo, and also forecast that Kosovo would become the independent
state.

"Kosovo will probably become an independent state. There has to be
the consent of the European Union for Kosovo to become independent,"
he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Seligo noted that Slovenia would pay particular attention to
resolving the issue of Kosovo’s status during Slovenia’s EU
presidency.

In his opinion, the European Union should play a major role in this
issue.

"Stability in the Western Balkans is very important for Europe’s
security and stability. It is very important to resolve the issue of
Kosovo’s future status and manage this process after resolving the
issue," the ambassador said.

Seligo described as incorrect the opinion that the settlement of the
status of Kosovo would influence other frozen conflicts, in
particular, those in Transdniestria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and
Nagorno-Karabakh. He stressed the need to take into account the
character of history of various conflicts, adding that it would be
wrong to link them.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
