Pre-Election Campaign Kicked Off

PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN KICKED OFF

The pre-election campaign officially kicked off on January 21. The
nine candidates seeking to stand in Armenia’s presidential election
are Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian, deputy parliament speaker Vahan
Hovannissian, former President Levon Ter-Petrossian, former parliament
speaker Arthur Baghdasarian as well as two other opposition leaders,
Artashes Geghamian and Vazgen Manukian. Also on the ballot will be
businessman and TV commentator Tigran Karapetian, university lecturer
Aram Harutiunian, Arman Melikian, Nagorno-Karabakh’s former permanent
representative to Armenia.

Some of the candidates already effectively kicked off their campaign
late last year.

The campaign will last till February 17, 2008.

The presidential election is scheduled for February 19.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered.
