POLICE URGE VOTERS AND POLITICAL PARTIES TO VERIFY VOTER LISTS

YEREVAN, JANUARY 21, ARMENPRESS: Armenian police have urged citizens
to check their names in preliminary voter lists which can be reached
on the Internet at website.

The police which are in charge of preparing and verifying the
lists, have also called on , political parties and non-governmental
organizations to check the lists for detecting possible inaccuracies
and report them to passport and visa departments.

The most widely reported inaccuracies are presence of deceased
people’s names, names of voters who have changed their residence,
names of servicemen called up for mandatory military service and
names of Armenians who are absent of the country.

The police have opened a hot line which will be effective until
February 18, a day before the February 19 election.

In a statement the police also denied allegations by a deputy
chairperson of the opposition Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) party,
Heghine Bisharian, who claimed during a new s conference last week
that part of 178 million Drams, earmarked by the budget for printing
new passports this year, would be spent on printing extra passports
to be used for rigging the election.

The police statement said the money is to be used for printing new
passports for replacing the old passports issued in 1996 which are
no longer valid.

The statement accused Mrs. Bisharian of reviving allegations of some
opposition parties’ claims in the wake of 2007 May parliamentary
elections that the authorities had printed thousands of fake passports
for double voting in their favor.
