YEREVAN, JANUARY 28, NOYAN TAPAN. "The brawls that happened during
the elections of 1999 and 2003 were instigated exclusively by the
authorities, as a result of their hysteria. However, it is more
inadmissible when such clashes are caused by the opposition." Vazgen
Manukian, the Chairman of the National Democratic Union party, a
candidate for presidency, stated at the January 28 press conference,
commenting upon the brawl instigated by the supporters of first
Armenian President, candidate for presidency Levon Ter-Petrosian
during the preelection meeting in Talin the day before.
Touching upon the first President’s statement about having an army of
10 thousand servicemen, V. Manukian said that in rigging the elections,
in the process of organization of repeated voting, as well as for
supressing the opposition rallies by force an army of 10 thousand
servicemen is really sufficient.
