Thousands of opposition supporters rally ahead of Armenian election

Thousands of people have staged a rally in the Armenian capital,
Yerevan, to show their support for one of the leading candidates in
the upcoming presidential election.

Crowds of people marched through the main streets of the capital
criticising the current leadership.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who was the first president of Armenia in the
90, headed the rally.

Nine candidates are to compete in the presidential election, which is
due to take place on February 19.

Armenia’s current Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisyan is the main rival of
Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
