TER-PETROSIAN’S ELECTION CAMPAIGN LAWSUIT THROWN OUT

Armenia’s Constitutional Court threw out on Monday a suit in
which former President Levon Ter-Petrosian sought to have alleged
obstacles he is having in his presidential election campaign declared
insurmountable, a ruling that would have led to the deferment of
the election.

Ter-Petrosian, who was the first president of post-Soviet Armenia
and was in office in 1991-98, argued in his suit that Armenian Public
Television had launched "an unprecedented propaganda campaign" against
him as a result of which he was unable to campaign "on equal terms
with the other candidates."

The Armenian constitution prescribes putting off a presidential
election for two weeks if any of the candidates comes up against
"insurmountable obstacles" to their campaign. If such obstacles are
not removed by the end of the two-week period, a new election is to
be held on the 40th day after this period.
