Karabakh marks 20 years of liberation movement

STEPANAKERT Feb 20

A rally was held in Stepanakert on Wednesday to mark 20 years of the
Karabakh national liberation movement.

The participants backed a statement by the National Assembly of the
self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which, among other
things, confirms the readiness of the people of Nagorno Karabakh to
continue the formation of a democratic state, as well as the
determination to resolve the conflict with Azerbaijan exclusively
through talks.

The statement also says that the parliament of Nagorno Karabakh
insists "on the repudiation of the pointless policy of
confrontation, and on the creation of an atmosphere of
tolerance and mutual trust between the conflicting parties, which
is expected to give a positive impetus to the search for a
comprehensive settlement."

The National Assembly urged all parliaments, the United Nations and
international organizations tofacilitate dialogue between
representatives of Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh.
Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent
districts in a bloody conflict with Stepanakert. The conflict
over Nagorno Karabakh is being settled by the co-chairmen of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Minsk Group,
representing the United States, Russia and France.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
