Supporters of former Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosian reiterated
their demand at a rally in Yerevan on Tuesday that the official
results of last week’s allegedly rigged presidential elections be
annulled and that Ter-Petrosian be declared president.
According to the official results, the elections were won by Prime
Minister Serzh Sargsyan.
Police said Tuesday’s rally, held on Freedom Square, brought together
about 20,000 people while rally organizers had predicted a turnout
of about 100,000.
Rally participants planned to march to the Central Election Commission
headquarters to formally present their demand for annulling the
election results.
After that, they were going to proceed to the Prosecutor General’s
Office and demand the release of all Ter-Petrosian supporters who
had been arrested.
Police were poised to prevent a possible clash between supporters of
Ter-Petrosian and those of Sargsyan.
Police reinforcements were detailed to guard public facilities.
