"HOLDING OF DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA IS TRADITION", RPA SPOKESPERSON BELIEVES
Noyan Tapan
Feb 28, 2008
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 28, NOYAN TAPAN. The society solved the most
important problem, which was set in front of it and the state, that
is, to organize normal elections in conformity with democratic
standards. This statement was made by Eduard Sharmazanov, the
Spokesperson of the Republican Party of Armenia, at the press
conference held on February 28, who added at the same time that he
cannot say that there have been no flaws and violations during the
elections. However, according to him, the Republican Party of Armenia
and the pre-electoral headquarters of Serge Sargsian were among the
first to condemn all the anti-legal phenomena, from instigations up
to violence.
Eduard Sharmazanov, however, mentioned that most of society and the
representatives of the international observation mission once again
affirmed that the holding of democratic elections in Armenia is,
henceforth, a tradition.
The Spokesperson of the Republican Party of Armenia considered the
call of Serge Sargsian on cooperation addressed to all the political
forces as very normal. According to him, it is mentioned both in the
five-year program of the government and the pre-electoral program of
Serge Sargsian that the main pledge of the success of the reforms
of the second generation is the unity of society. "Serge Sargsian
proved with that step that he puts his personal ambitions and desires
much lower than the interest of our nation," Eduard Sharmazanov
said. According to him, he made that call taking into consideration
today’s situation and the polarization of sociaty. "There are no
enemies in Armenia for us, one should not look for enemies among
one’s own people," Eduard Sharmazanov said.
And in response to the question of which forces have responded to that
call, Eduard Sharmazanov did not give names, mentioning that those
forces themselves should tell about it. At the same time he mentioned:
"Armen Rustamian from the ARF Dashnaktsutiun has considered that call
very normal, Artashes Geghamian, too, the Orinats Yerkir (Country of
Law) Party is discussing."
As regards the question of what the final staff of the government
will be like, according to Eduard Sharmazanov, that will become clear
after political consultations. In his words, it is of principle for the
Republican Party of Armenia not to preserve the portfolio of the Prime
Minister, but to provide the implementation of the five-year program
of the government and the development of the country. "We are not the
party, which wants by all means to preserve power. That is not a goal
for us, but a means for the settlement of the problems existing in
the country," the Spokesperson of the Republican Party of Armenia said.
