YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 29, NOYAN TAPAN. The main subject of the February
29 press briefing of RA NA factions was the strained situation formed
in the country after the presidential elections and the possible ways
of coming out of it.
The Bargavach Hayastan and OYP factions did not take part in the
press briefings. The representatives of the Zharangutiun, ARFD, and
RPA factions again touched upon the appeal of cooperation addressed
by the Prime Minister, newly elected President Serge Sargsian to the
former RA presidential candidates and the political forces having
supported them, attaching importance to the possible dialogue.
In the opinion of Stepan Safarian, the Secretary of the Zharangutiun
faction, "both sides in many respects are still in a deadlock." In
his words, on the one hand, when the number of people gathered in
Liberty Square grows day by day, any use of force by the authorities
is inefficient, on the other hand, not to take any preventive step
also means that this situation can continue as long as the opposition
is able to protract it. "In any case any side is paralyzed," the
deputy said.
Hrayr Karapetian, the head of the ARFD faction, reaffirmed the party’s
position that both sides should exclude use of force. According
to him, the only way is that even those, who are very discontent
with the elections should put aside the political and personal
interests, consider country’s interests as more important, and agree
to negotiations.
According to Mkrtich Minasian, a member of the RPA faction, even
enemy states negotiate with each other to find a way out. "Naturally,
in our country we cannot remain split and through negotiations we
should go in the direction of mitigating this political tension and
ensuring a normal life," the deputy said.
