Armenian opposition leader Levon Ter- Petrosian has demanded that
the official outcome of the presidential elections be annulled and
that opposition leaders detained by police be immediately released.

"This revolution is aimed at freeing the people of feudal tyrants,"
Ter-Petrosian said at a rally of his supporters on Freedom Square in
Yerevan on Wednesday.

Ter-Petrosian claimed that many officials from government ministries,
the parliament secretariat, and law enforcement agencies have taken
the opposition’s side.

"Many Armenian government officials have in fact taken our side,
although they are not openly admitting this for fear of persecution,"
Ter-Petrosian said.

Respublica opposition party leader Aram Sarkisian said at the same
rally, "The Armenian authorities have the perfect chance to quit in
a legal way to meet the people’s will."

"It will take just a couple more days for the Armenian authorities
to have to satisfy all of our demands," Sarkisian said.

The opposition is demanding that "the Central Elections Commission
annul the outcome of the presidential elections and release all our
supporters detained by police."

Police estimated the number of those rallying on Freedom Square in
Yerevan at about 10,000 people, while the opposition is claiming that
at least 100,000 people came there to support them.

Armenia held presidential elections on February 19, in which Prime
Minister Serzh Sargsyan was proclaimed the winner.

Supporters of rival candidate Ter-Petrosian have been protesting in
Yerevan since February 20.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
