Despite the dispersal of an Armenian opposition rally by police
troops on Saturday morning, the opposition is determined to resume
the protest rally on the square near the Matenadaran Museum of Ancient
Scripts in downtown Yerevan at 3:00 p.m. Moscow time, local media
have reported.

If police block the entrance to the square, the opposition will gather
on Mashtots Avenue.

Witnesses say police used rubber batons while dispersing the opposition
rally attended by several thousand participants on Freedom Square in
downtown Yerevan early on Saturday.

The center of Yerevan is currently blocked to traffic, and police
troops wearing helmets and holding shields have cordoned off the
square.

Police are dismantling tents, in which supporters of Levon
Ter-Petrosian, a presidential candidate who lost recent parliamentary
elections, have been camping in since February 21.

Ter-Petrosian, who was also on Freedom Square when the rally was
dispersed, is currently under house arrest, media report.

The whereabouts of several Ter-Petrosian’s associates is still unknown
after the dispersal of the rally, Ter-Petrosian’s campaign staff said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
