MARIOS GAROYAN WINS WITH EASE

Mario s Garoyan has been elected third President of the centre-right
Democratic Party (DIKO), succeeding Cyprus President Tassos
Papadopoulos who resigned from the post in August this year.
Marios Garoyan (An Armenian Cypriot) was elected with a margin of 63%
while acting President and Vice President Nicos Kleanthous collected
37% (4759/2840).
Garoyian was the winner in all regions except Larnaca where Kleanthous
recorded his only victory in his home town.

Kleanthous 506, Famagusta – Garoyan 432 – Kleanthous 229, Paphos –
Garoyan 976 – Kleanthous 314, Larnaca – Garoyan 399 – Kleanthous
831 Although from the begining Marios Garoyan was the favourite,
the contest proved to be much easier than what political analysts
had expected.
After his victory, Garoyan thanked the voters for their support and
called for unity. In his short speech he did not forgot to mention
Spyros Kyprianou the founder of the party as well as today’s president
Tassos Papadopoulos.
He promised to implement the existing political line and modernise
the Democratic Party.
>From his part Nicos Kleanthous promised that he will vigilantly
follow Garoyan’s work so that Diko continues its rise in the Cypriot
Political Arena.
