Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of
Armenia, Colonel General Seyran Ohanyan told a news conference in
Yerevan today that no violation on the part of the army or the society
has been registered after the declaration of a state of emergency
with a presidential decree.
"I have talked to the leadership of the operations group and I’m glad
to state that almost no violations of public order have been registered
either by the armed forces or the law-enforcement bodies. There have
been breaches peculiar of everyday reality," the General said.
According to Seyran Ohanyan, being a military structure, the armed
forces solve the issue of peace, as well. "It has been the case during
the national liberation movement when the army stood next to people,
maintaining their peace. It was the case during post-war years. We must
remember that the sons of people serve in the army. The principle of
maintenance of peace is maintained also in the international relations,
since we carry out peacekeeping activity in Iraq and Kosovo," the
Chief of the General Staff noted.
He stressed that in the current situation the armed forces, the police
and the law-enforcement bodies must work with the people to establish
stability in the capital.
