ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT APPROVES 2008 PROGRAM ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT

YEREVAN, MARCH 13, NOYAN TAPAN. At the March 13 sitting, the
Armenian government approved the 2008 program on development of
the IT sector. The RA minister of trade and economic development
Nerses Yeritsian told reporters after the sitting that it is for
the first sum that in 2008 a separate allocation of 100 mln drams
(about 322 thousand USD) will be provided from the state budget for
the sector’s development. It is envisaged to implement a number of
programs for the IT industry’s state and private sectors with these
resources. In particular, a research of the IT sector will be done,
as well as organization of exhibitions and conferences in Armenia
will continue. According to the minister, an IT Month will be held
this year too.
Besides, a programming contest will be organized jontly with the
private sector for the first time, during which the best programmer
or software will be selected.
N. Yeritsian said that joint programs will be implemented with Sun
Microsystems and Microsoft. An IT and entrepreneurship development
center will be set up at the State Engineering University of Armenia
in cooperation with the UN global forum dealing with issues the
information communication sector’s development.
