Armenian president endorses opposition leader’s house arrest

Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has effectively endorsed
opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s house arrest, opposition
daily Haykakan Zhamanak has reported.

The paper was referring to amendments, signed by Kocharyan on 21
March, to the law on "Security of persons subject to special state
protection".

The Armenian opposition had maintained that the country’s former
president, Ter-Petrosyan, was placed under house arrest after
security forces dispersed the opposition rally in the capital Yerevan
on 1 March.

The rally started on 20 February in protest against the results of
the 19 February presidential polls of which Prime Minister Serzh
Sargsyan was declared the winner.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
