NY
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Dr. Death made it official Monday: He’s running
for Congress and planning to shake up Washington.
"This is the most important thing in my life right now,"
assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian said in announcing he’s
running as an independent in Michigan’s 9th District.
"If I get into the House, it’s not going to be a docile place,"
he vowed in an otherwise rambling news conference.
If elected, he said, his priority will be promoting the little-known
Ninth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the rights it guarantees.
The amendment protects rights not explicitly specified elsewhere in
the Constitution, and Kevorkian says he interprets it as protecting
a person’s choice to die through assisted suicide or to avoid wearing
a seat belt.
Kevorkian, 79, a retired pathologist, claims to have helped at least
130 people die from 1990 until 1998.
