RUSSIA SUPPORTS ARMENIA IN FIGHTING INTERNAL POLITICAL CRISIS

YEREVAN, March 26. /ARKA/. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin expressed
his support to the people and authorities of Armenia in efforts to
establish stability and cope with current difficulties. Putin stated
this at a Moscow meeting with Armenia’s president elect, Prime Minister
Serge Sargssyan.
The Armenian premier presented the political situation in the country
stressing that Armenian authorities are resolute to establish stability
and an atmosphere of tolerance in the country.
Putin expressed optimism that the newly elected president will manage
to solve the country’s internal political problems.
>From February 20 to March 1, Armenia’s opposition political forces
led by ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan were holding rallies in
Liberty Square in Yerevan protesting against the results of February
19 presidential elections inn which Prime Minister Serge Sargssyan
won. The rallies turned into clashes between the rally participants
and the police.
On March 1, RA President Robert Kocharyan issued a decree on imposing
a twenty-day state of emergency in the capital.
