Russian mobile phone company VimpelCom plans to cut investment in
Armenia by 18% this year to U.S. $74 million, the company’s Vice
President Dmitry Pleskonos told reporters Monday.

The bulk of investment will go into the development of wireline and
wireless networks, including third generation (3G) networks.

VimpelCom plans to launch 3G services in Armenia in two or three
months, Pleskonos said.

In separate news, VimpelCom has launched its Beeline brand in that
country after winning a copyright violation lawsuit against Armenian
computer equipment and IT solution vendor Bi Line.

VimpelCom, Russia’s second biggest mobile operator, fully owns
ArmenTel, the smaller of Armenia’s two carriers.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
