SERGE SARGSYAN TO ASSUME OFFICE TODAY

According to RA Constitution, RA President-Elect Serge Sargsyan will
assume office today by swearing in during a special sitting of the
National Assembly to be convened at the National Academic Theatre of
Opera and Ballet after Alexander Spendiaryan (RA incumbent President
Robert Kocharyan assumed office on April 9, 2003).
The Constitution also provides for the text of the President’s oath:
"Assuming the office of the President of the Republic of Armenia I
swear: to fulfill the requirements of the Constitution in an unreserved
manner; to respect the fundamental human and civil rights and freedoms;
to ensure the protection, independence, territorial integrity and
security of the Republic to the glory of the Republic of Armenia and
to the welfare of the people of the Republic of Armenia."
Serge Sargsyan’s swearing in ceremony will be followed by a parade
at the Liberty Square. The Spokesman for the Minister of Defense,
Colonel Seyran Shahsuvaryan informed that troops of the Ministry
of Defence, the Police troops, the frontier forces, the Military
Orchestra of the Ministry of Defense and the Guard of Honor will
march in the Liberty Square.
In compliance with RA Constitution, on the day of taking office the
Armenian President accepts the Government’s resignation. Members of
Government continue carrying out their duties until a new Cabinet
is formed.
RA President shall appoint the Prime minister within ten days after the
Government’s resignation. On the basis of the distribution of the seats
in the National Assembly and consultations held with the parliamentary
factions, appoint as Prime Minister the person enjoying confidence of
the majority of the Deputies and if this is impossible the President of
the Republic shall appoint as the Prime Minister the person enjoying
confidence of the maximum number of the Deputies. The Government is
formed within 20 days after the Prime Minister’s appointment.
