Court bailiffs visited the GALA TV in [the second largest Armenian
town of] Gyumri at 1400 [local time, 0900 gmt] yesterday [16 April]
and forced the management to vacate the old TV tower that is owned
by the Gyumri municipality. At 1600 hours [1100 gmt] the GALA TV
was taken off the air. The 14 April ruling of the Armenian Court
of Appeals sustained the 29 February ruling of the Shirak Region
Court of General Jurisdiction instructing the GALA TV to remove its
transmitters from the old TV tower in Gyumri.
"Temporarily taking the GALA TV off the air under the tense political
situation in Armenia may lead to unpredictable developments, especially
in the second largest city of the republic. The hasty actions of the
court bailiffs make us believe that taking the GALA TV off the air
is a number one goal of the authorities," a statement issued by GALA
yesterday says.
