YEREVAN, APRIL 18, NOYAN TAPAN. Armenia will not develop without
serious reforms of the educational system, while its modernization
is just impossible without such reforms, the Armenian prime minister
Tigran Sargsian expressed this conviction during a meeting with the
staff of the RA ministry of education and science in connection with
re-appointment of Levon Mkrtchian to the post of minister. In the words
of the prime minister, the new team being formed in the government is a
team of devotees who will implement reforms jointly with the ministry.

The prime minister pointed out 9 out of 29 provisions of the Lisbon
Declaration, which, in his opinion, are of special importance to
Armenia.

These provisions are:

– Armenia should be based on powerful universities, otherwise it is
impossible to have a strong Armenia,

– building of knowledge-based society,

– intergration of universities and society,

– formation of a favorable educational environment,

– creation of an educational system preparing employees for markets,

– formation of a continuous educational system,

– strengthening the link beween the higher education system and
scientific and research institutions,

– creation of a link between universities and manufacturers,

– introduction of innovation processes in the educational system.

T. Sargsian underlined the necessity to found an All-Armenian
university.

The minister Levon Mkrtchian thanked the president and the prime
minister for their trust and added that he is ready to contribute
his experience and knowledge to the implementation of radical
and significant changes in the sphere of education. "The ministry
staff attaches great importance to serious concern and attitude
of the president and the prime minister to the issue of developing
the educational system. Such conceptual proposals are made by the
executive body for the first time, and we consider it as a start in
educational processes," L. Mkrtchian pointed out.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
