YEREVAN, APRIL 24, NOYAN TAPAN. On April 24, the commemoration
day of the Armenian Genocide victims, RA President Serge Sargsian,
Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, National Assembly Speaker
Tigran Torosian, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsian, members of government,
and other high-ranking officials visited Tsitsernakaberd memorial
complex. Representatives of foreign diplomatic missions accredited
in Armenia, Armenian communities that arrived from abroad, Armenian
public, political figures came to Tsitsernakaberd to pay the tribute
of their respect to the victims’ memory.

Like the previous years, people’s flow to Tsitsernakaberd hill
continued from early morning.

Tigran Torosian said that the only way of overcoming hundreds of
threats and challenges is a powerful state ensuring well-off, honorable
life for its citizens, the basis of which is citizens’ respect to one
another, tolerance, and love. "I think anyone who comes here today
and bows his head before the victims’ memory should think that it
is the behest of the victims, it is the greatest tribute of respect
to their memory. Any serious and important issue always presumes a
difficult way, but I am convinced that during the years of existence
of our state it already became obvious that the recognition of the
Genocide has been accelerated much more than before the establishment
of our independent statehood," T. Torosian said.

T. Sargsian in his interview to journalists said that "there is no
Armenian family that does not mourn over the April 24 tragic events
here today, there is no family that has not dealt with those tragic
events: directly or indirectly, that tragedy has knocked at the door
of any Armenian family." He emphasized that we should learn lessons
from history: "We should be so clever to understand that the guarantee
of avoiding such tragic events in the future is our being strong and
consolidated," he said.

RA Defence Minister Seyran Ohanian also said that Armenia should
learn lessons from the past and do its best to ensure its people’s
further development. "Everything should be done for our country and
our people to be protected, and planned steps are needed for it,"
the Minister said.

According to Arpi Vardanian, the Regional Director of the Armenian
Assembly of America (AAA) in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, in the
past 5-10 years the Armenian Genocide becomes more known in the West
and in Turkey as well. In her words, that issue begins to be spoken
about and discussed in different countries. "We should continue
struggle against all genocides, both in Armenia and outside, for all
countries and especially Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide. I
also consider it very important that Israel and the United States at
last recognize the Armenian Genocide and call it just this way and
not use other words," she said.

It should be mentioned that 10 years ago former RA President Robert
Kocharian declared inclusion of the issue of recognition of the
Armenian Genocide into Armenia’s foreign political agenda.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
