TACTICAL EXERCISE HELD AT RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN ARMENIA
Zvezda TV, Russia
April 24 2008
[Presenter] Shots were heard in Armenian Gyumri today. Military
training was conducted at the Russian military base there. Gyumri is
the country’s southernmost outpost. This is why our soldiers there
need ideal tactical skills. This time, according to the plan of
the exercise, the enemy was trying to break through to the Russian
borders. Our special correspondent Andrey Kovtunenko reports from
Gyumri, where there is always full combat readiness.
[Correspondent] This is a scheduled live firing at the Gamkhut range,
a few kilometres away from [the Armenian town of] Gyumri, where the
headquarters of the 102nd Russian military base is situated. Servicemen
of the 128th motor-rifle regiment are conducting effective fire.
[Unidentified speaker] The climate here allows one to shoot both in
winter and in summer.
[Correspondent] While some servicemen are shooting, others are
practising hand-to-hand fight. [Passage omitted]
Here on a training ground servicemen are taught to drive T-72
tanks. The aim is to teach servicemen to drive equipment on difficult
to access terrain at a maximum speed in various seasons and at various
times of the day.
Meanwhile, servicemen at the base are having a marching drill. [Passage
omitted].
>From 1992, according to an agreement between Russia and Armenia,
our servicemen guard Southern borders here.
[Aleksandr Peryayev, commander of the 102nd Russian military base,
captioned] The 102nd military base here on the territory of the
Republic of Armenia, performs the tasks of defending the southern
border of the Russian Federation and, together with CIS military units,
carries out air defence tasks.
