Russia: Girl sentenced to 20 months in jail for race attack
Krasnodar, 7 May: The Pervomayskiy district court in Krasnodar has
handed down a guilty verdict to a local 16-year-old girl who was
accused of beating a female Kenyan student and inflicting a knife
wound on an Armenian citizen on the grounds of racial hatred.
A court representative told Interfax-Yug that the girl was sentenced
to one year and eight months of imprisonment in a juvenile
correctional facility and to a R3,000 [127 dollars] fine payable to
the state.
In addition, the victims had filed civil lawsuits which were also
sustained by the court. The defendant will have to pay R20,000 to the
beaten Kenyan student and R40,000 to the stabbed Armenian.
The girl accompanied her actions with the shouts that denigrated the
honour and dignity of the victims.
The investigation qualified the defendant’s actions under Article 116
Part 2 Paragraph B of the Russian Criminal Code (beating someone on
the grounds of racial hatred) and Article 111 Part 2 Paragraph E of
the Russian Criminal Code (intentional infliction of grave harm to the
health that endangers a person’s life, on the grounds of racial
hatred).
