`Lexicology and loanwords’ is a new book published by Syrian-Armenian writer Avo Katerjian

Azad-Hye Special

With its 1000 words and full Armenian equivalents, this is a unique
book, useful for teachers, students, researchers, translators and
others. It is an excellent resource to find out the meaning of foreign
words, nowadays in common use in everyday spoken and written Armenian.

In the introduction, Avo Katerjian explains about the two major parts
of the book: "Armenian lexicology" and "loanwords", referring to cases
of borrowing and adopting words from many sources (languages) and the
way they are used recently in the Armenian language.

Also he points out that the book could have been larger, but it is
only a collection of selected foreign words, that have been taken from
other languages and included in the Armenian language, both in Armenia
or in Diaspora. Such words are: alarm, allergy, embargo, ashugh,
dualism, energy, institute, humor, logo, global, icon, error message,
manifest, marathon, radical, screen, paragraph, capitalism, concrete,
formula, etc…

In order to cover the eastern and western Armenian language, the
author has added the western pronunciations in brackets, next to the
words with eastern pronunciations.

It is worth mentioning that the bibliography which is included in the
book is very diversified. The author has referred to Armenian,
English, Turkish, French and Arabic dictionaries, in addition to a
large number of books and sources about the Armenian language and
grammar. Index can be easily used to locate a word.

The book is the result of several years of compiling and gathering. It
could be very useful for those who lack knowledge of foreign
languages.

Avo Katerjian has published in 1996 a book dedicated to Nakhichevan
entitled `Armenian Nakhichevan or distorted NAXCIVAN’ (see link
below). He also has many articles in the Armenian press like
`Kantsasar’ (Aleppo), `Aztag’ (Beirut), `Droshag’ (Yerevan), `Horizon’
(Canada), `Asbarez’ (Los Angeles), `Abaraj’ (Karabakh), `Alik’
(Tehran).

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
