YEREVAN, JUNE 6, NOYAN TAPAN. In the words of National Assembly
"Heritage" faction’s member Stepan Safarian, the RA prosecutor
general Aghvan Hovsepian "was obviously lying" during the June 5
parliamentary hearings on the RA Ombudsman Armen Harutyunian’s special
report on the presidential election and postelection developments in
Armenia. According to the deputy, the prosecutor was trying to prove
that the March 1 "military-police operation had no authors".
S. Safarian said at the June 6 press conference that "Heritage"
boycotted the parliamentary hearings of the report as they were
deprived of the right to make a speech. Whereas, as the deputy pointed
out, according to the NA by-laws, the faction with the least number
of members shall be the first to make a speech.
He expressed an opinion that the discussion was mostly proceeding
in another plane: whether or not the ombudsman had the right to
write such a report, whether or not he exceeded authority. Whereas,
according to S. Safarian, the hearings should have been related
to the report’s contents and the issues it raised. "Unfortunately,
no answers were given to these questios," the NA deputy noted.
He announced that he had urged the prosecutor general to show unedited
versions of the March 1 video material on Public Television.
