PACE CO-RAPPORTEURS ARRIVED IN ARMENIA

Georges Colombier (France) and John Prescott (United Kingdom),
co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
(PACE) on the monitoring of Armenia’s obligations and commitments,
are making a fact-finding visit to Armenia on 16 and 17 June, in
order to assess the implementation of PACE Resolution 1609 (2008)
on the functioning of democratic institutions in Armenia.
During the visit, the co-rapporteurs will meet, among others, the
President of the Republic Serzh Sargsyan, the President of the National
Assembly Tigran Torosyan, representatives of the political parties,
both from the ruling coalition and the opposition, representatives of
the extra-parliamentary opposition, including Levon Ter-Petrossian, the
presidential working group for the co-ordination of the implementation
of PACE resolution 1609, the parliamentary working group on the reform
of the electoral code, defense lawyers of detained opposition activists
and representatives of NGOs.
If, at the end of their visit, the co-rapporteurs conclude that
insufficient progress has been made, the Assembly may hold a debate
under urgent procedure on 25 June, at its summer session, on the
functioning of democratic institutions Armenia.
