YEREVAN, JUNE 16, NOYAN TAPAN. In Armenia the parliamentary elections
took place a year ago, all in all, and all those, who wanted, could
take part in them. This statement was made by Serge Sargsian, the
President of the Republic of Armenia, in the June 13 short briefing
with journalists, commenting on the calls of the opposition on holding
extra-parliamentary elections. According to the President, there are
no dissatisfied people only in countries, where the 100 percent of
the population takes part in the elections, and one of the parties or
candidates receives 100 percent of votes. The RA President mentioned
that there will be elections of local self-governmental bodies and
of the Mayor of the city of Yerevan, which makes one third of the
country, in autumn: "Well, may they take part, win and show us how
well they can work."
In his interview with journalists the RA President also made assertions
that all those, who want to hold rallies, will be supported by the
municipality and law enforcement bodies and given an opportunity to
hold a rally. "There have always been and will be rallies in Armenia
and I have declared for many times that I will always defend the right
of our citizens for expressing their complaint," the President said,
at the same time stressing that "all of us should realize that our
rights cannot be more prefarable than those of others." He stated that
the municipality of Yerevan has offered the representatives of the
opposition to hold a rally at the time they have mentioned in another
place, "well, may they hold their rally," then turning to journalists
the President mentioned: "There is nothing to be worried about (NT,
on June 20), everything will be quiet, normal and all right."
