The Armenian opposition held a rally near the Matenadaran Institute
of Ancient Manuscripts in downtown Yerevan on Friday. Police said
about 6,500 people took part in the action.
Supporters of first Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrossian plan
to start an open-ended sit-in, radical opposition co-leader David
Shahnazarian told the rally. He said that form of protest would end
with a new presidential election.
Ter-Petrossian’s press secretary Levon Zurabian said that the sit-in
would end on August 1, when the opposition holds the next rally
under the slogan of the impeachment of President Serzh Sargsyan and
a new election.
The opposition marched down the city center and chanted
anti-governmental slogans.
The Armenian radical opposition wants an early presidential election,
Ter-Petrossian told the rally. He once again blamed the authorities
for the March 1-2 riots, in which ten people, including two police
officers, died.
