On July 4 Armenia’s Human Rights Ombudsman Armen Harutiunian sent
an official letter to the Head of the National Security Service of
Armenia, Gorik Hakobian. The Ombudsman requested the NSS to ensure
the security of his family members.to provide him and his family
members with personal security.
The written application of A. Harutiunian runs in part: "Under
Article 21 of the RoA Law on "Human Rights Ombudsman," the latter
and his family members are under the state protection. Based on the
ombudsman’s application, the authoritative government bodies have to
take the required measures to assure security of the ombudsman and his
family members. I request individual security for me and my family
members. Five employees of the relevant body and two automobiles
should escort my family members," runs the Ombudsman’s letter.
Armen Harutiunian made the request according to the corresponding law,
reports the Office of the RoA Ombudsman.
Later in the day we tried to find out whether a threat was ever made to
the Ombudsman’s family. "Nothing of the kind," said Grigor Grigoriants,
Head of the Department of Information and Public Ties.
The press service of the National Security Service learned about
the letter from the press. Artsrun Baghramian, Head of the NSS
press service, says he is sure that the request will be put under
consideration as soon as the lette is received.
