EUROPEAN UNION HAS NO OBJECTIONS TO CONSTRUCTION OF SECOND NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN ARMENIA: FOREIGN MINISTRY
ARKA
July 11
The European Union has no objections to the construction of the
second nuclear power plant (NPP) in Armenia, said Lusine Movsisyan,
first secretary of the EU Department, RA Foreign Ministry.
EU formerly spoke against the RA Government’s intention to construct
a NPP and called on Armenian authorities to build alternative energy
sources instead.
"Amid the record-high oil and gas prices, EU understands the necessity
of the new NPP in Armenia," Movsisyan said at today’s workshop on
the European Neighborhood Policy Action Program.
She did not rule out possible financial assistance of EU to the
project.
However, Mosvisyan said it is too early to make any forecast.
EU has recorded a considerable progress in the renewable energy
development in Armenia last year.
Armenia plans to construct a 1,000 MW NPP soon. The government plans
to allocate some $2bln will be allocated for the project.
