Leader of the People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchian was the
guest of "Hayeli" club on July 15. He hoped that the Council of
Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg would give an
objective report on Armenia that will contribute to the settlement
of the created situation in the country.
Touching upon Davit Shahnazarian announcement of collecting signatures
against former President Robert Kocharian to bring an action against
the latter, PPA leader mentioned that the collecting of signatures is
not a political initiative but a social one. "As the justice system
does not work in Armenia, the society looks for justice outside the
country", he said.
Demirchian touched upon also the Armenian PM Tigran Sargsian’s
announcement at the congress of "Jarangutyun" party about the
cooperation of the political forces for the stability in the
country. Demirchian’s first demand is to release the political
prisoners and only after it to start a dialogue with the authorities.
What about the PPA participation in the Armenian National Congress
aiming at formation of one party, Demirchian said that formation of
one party is not workable.
When speaking of the Armenian-Turkish relations and Serge Sargsian’s
invitation to Abdullah Gul, Demirchian mentioned that it is a
diplomatic initiative, but their party is against the proposal of
creating a commission to study the Genocide issue.
