ARMENIAN NATIONAL DEMOCRATS UNHAPPY ABOUT SIGNATURE COLLECTION AGAINST ROBERT KOCAHRYAN
ARKA
July 23
Signature collection started on the initiative of the opposition for
suing former president Robert Kocharyan in the Hague Tribunal has
prompted criticism from National Democratic Party of Armenia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party says the suit can strike
hard at national interests and tarnish Armenia’s reputation.
The opposition accuses Kocharyan of orchestrating March killings
in Yerevan.
The party says in its statement that the Hague Tribunal launches legal
proceedings on suits filed by the state or international organization,
not citizens. Besides, defendants are accused of crimes against
humanity, ethnic cleansings or military crimes.
The party reminds to the opposition that Azerbaijani authorities
have repeatedly stated that they intend to sue Armenians officials
for committing ethnic cleansings, genocide and military crimes.
National Democrats think that Azerbaijanis will take advantage from
Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s initiative.
They also fear that the Tribunal will considers suit against Robert
Kocharyan instead of scrutinizing genocides committed against Armenians
in Turkey and Azerbaijan.
The party urges the opposition to stop collecting signatures.
Otherwise, as National Democrats think, it will be considered as
intended support for Azerbaijan’s plans to submit false accusations
for Armenia and Karabakh to international organizations.
Armenian opposition headed by former President Levion Ter-Perosyan
launched protests after the presidential election saying it was
fraudulent.
The protests ended in clashes between protesters and law
enforcements. As a result, ten were killed and 265 injured.
