PRO-GOVERNMENT CANDIDATES WIN LOCAL ELECTIONS

On Sunday, September 7, local elections were held at the districts
of Arabkir, Kanaker-Zeitun, Erebuni and Nubarashen. According to
the Central Election Commission businessman Albert Yeritsian was
elected district head of Arabkir getting 16591 votes. Yeritsian’s
rival, the incumbent district head Hovhnannes Shahinian, got 7172
votes. Zharangutiun’s candidate Zoya Tadevossian and Progressive
Party member Ashot Mnatsakanian got 5608 and 181 votes respectively.
The election was conducted in a tense atmosphere and began with a
violent incident.
The incident took place at 9 a.m. near the polling station 4/02. A few
Jeeps with a black-silver BMW X5 arrived at the polling station in the
morning. Witnesses say they were Yeritsian’s proponents. After getting
out of the cars the men attacked people with truncheons and knives
and stabbed Mher Kerobian, one of Hovhannes Shahinian’s adherents.
Several people got injuries. Mher Kerobian was taken to Erebuni
medical centre with knife injuries. He was stabbed in the face.
Arayik Kotanjian was reelected district head of Kanaker-Zeitun. He
got 12042 votes. Coordinator of the Democratic Way Party (ZhUK)
Manuel Gasparian got 8046 and nonpartisan Varujan Mkrtchian 682 votes.
"Bargavach Hayastan" Party member Mher Hovhannissian was reelected
district head of Nubarashen. Being a sole candidate the latter got
3290 votes for and 42 votes against.
Republican Armen Harutiunian was elected district head of Erebuni
with 21184 votes.
