Yerevan, 11 September: Russia has decided to provide 10m dollars for
boosting safety of the second bloc of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant
[NPP], Armen Movsisyan, [Armenia’s] minister of energy and natural
resources, told journalists today.

He said that Russia officially made this technical proposal to Armenia
today. The funds will be extended to Armenia in 2008 for carrying out
works to boost the NPP safety in 2009. The third working meeting on
coordinating the international aid, opening in Yerevan today, will
decide what kind of work should be carried out, Movsisyan said.

These meetings have been held once a year since 2006 when IAEA Director
General Mohamed ElBaradei said his agency was ready to coordinate
technical assistance for boosting the NPP safety. Movsisyan said that
since 2006, when the second bloc was re-launched, donors have allocated
about 90m dollars. He added that more than the half of that money,
about 50m-55m dollars, have been allocated by the USA and the rest
was given by the European Union countries.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
