TURKISH FOOTBALL FANS VISIT MUSEUM OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

6

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, NOYAN TAPAN. Some of Turkish football fans who
had arrived in Yerevan on September 6 to watch the Armenia-Turkey
football match visited the Museum-Institute of Armenian Genocide. Hayk
Demoyan, Museum Director, said at the September 13 press conference.
According to him, the Turks especially got interested in the temporary
exhibition organized on the subject of sport, which is evidence of
former joint trainings of Armenian and Turkish sportsmen. Some did not
like the exhibition and complained when leaving the museum saying: "did
these papazes (Armenians: NT) taught us to play football?" According to
H. Demoyan, any Turk who wishes to be acquainted with the gaps of his
own history, should find strength in himself and visit the Museum of
Armenian Genocide. He expressed the hope that next year when the
Armenia-Turkey return match will be held, a sports exhibition will be
organized there.

The museum Director also said that recognition of the Genocide should
be considered as not a political gesture, but as a step taken for the
purpose of preventing further genocides.

Touching upon the issue of extradition of Azeri Ramil Safarov killing
Armenian officer Gurgen Margarian, H. Demoyan expressed confidence that
Hungary’s justice will not yield to the pressures of the Azeri side and
will not agree to return the murderer to the homeland. In case of
returning to Azerbaijan, according to H. Demoyan, R. Safarov will be
accepted as a hero and Azeris will do their best for him to be
released. It should be mentioned that the Hungarian court sentenced R.
Safarov to life imprisonment for an aforethought murder committed with
special cruelty.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
