On September 24, U.S. Ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch participated
in a conference organized by the RA Ministry of Energy and Natural
Resources and U.S. Government. The conference presented the conclusions
of recently completed planning studies for a new nuclear unit. The
studies, financed by the U.S. Government, provide essential first
stage analyses for the development of a new nuclear unit to replace
the aging Metsamor power plant which is to be retired in 2016.

The results of these studies will assist the Government of Armenia in
decision-making with respect to the technical options and solutions
for the new plant as well as serve as a basis for beginning discussions
with potential suppliers and international financing institutions.

During her opening remarks, Ambassador Yovanovitch noted, "These
studies will help identify the critical path to building a new nuclear
plant which will ensure the safety of the Armenian people and cover
Armenia’s energy needs for many years."

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
