Australian-based Armenian Vic Darchinyan (IBF) knocked out Mexican
Cristian Mijares (WBC, WBA) in the ninth round on Saturday thus
unifying flyweight world titles in dominant style.
Vakhtang Darchinyan, the International Boxing Federation champion,
added Mijares’s World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association
115-pound (52.1kg) titles to his IBF belt. After winning the title
of an absolute champion Vic ("Raging Bull") Darchinyan said willing
to compete with WBO champion Fernando Montelia.
"Mijares is a good sportsman, and it was rather difficult to beat
him. I want to unite the major champion belts. Next I want to fight
with Fernando Montelia. I don’t fight for money. Surely, money is of
great importance but I want to win fame. I want my son to be known
all over the world as the son of a world champion and legend. There
is nothing else I long for," said Darchinyan.
Cristian Mijares confessed that his rival was stronger. "I have nothing
to say. Throughout the fight I tried to fight him back but he proved
to be a stronger sportsman. I congratulate Vic on victory. I don’t
want to justify myself. I competed like a real Mexican relying on my
reason. I am ready to take revenge on him."
