ANCG Summer Intern, Talar Malakian Appointed to Commission on the
Status of Women

During the November 10th meeting of Glendale’s Commission on the
Status of Women, Chairwoman Carla Kerlin announced the appoint of ANCG
Summer Intern, Talar Malakian, for the position of student ex officio.
After reading through Malakian’s extensive list of acccomplishments in
the Glendale community, Commissioner Grace Walker noted that she is
pleased with the qualification of Ms. Malakian and welcomed her to the
commission.
Cuurently, Malakian is a student at Crescenta Valley High School where
she is the founder of a service club, United for Change, dedicated to
raising awareness about the situation of women who are domestically or
sexually abused. Ms. Malakian’s impressive list of accomplishments
also includes serving as Co-Chair of CV’s Falcon Award Committee,
Captain for the Homenetment Shant A Division’s Girls’ Basketball,
Member of the California Scholarship Federation, Columnist for
Glendale Periodical "Oragark", Member of the Armenian Sisters’ Academy
Alumni Association, Assistant Coach for the Armenian Sisters’ Academy
Basketball team and member of UNICEF. "I am truly grateful for being
given the opportunity to serve as a student ex officio for the
commission. I plan to reach out to young adults in our community and
encourage them to be more proactive in eliminating gender inequality
and raising awareness about domestic and sexual abuse and on other
issues of concern to women," stated Talar Malakian.
During the ANCG Internship Program, Malakian was responsible for
developing a strategic plan for the ANCG membership and was involved
in conducting voter registration drives. In addition, Malakian
assisted in raising funds for the Glendale Relay for Life, preparing
press advisories, and planning and conducting a city-wide survey on
the Glendale Smoking Ban Ordinance.
"The ANC Glendale Chapter is delighted to see Ms. Malakian be
appointed to such a position. We are confident that Ms. Malakian’s
involvement in the Glendale community and the ANCG Internship program
has prepared her for such an endeavor," stated Elen Asatryan,
Executive Director of ANCG. "She will without a doubt be an
invaluable asset to the commission," added Asatryan.
The Commission on the Status of Women assesses and evaluates the needs
and issues of women in the City in order to inform and advise the City
Council, City departments and other community agencies and
organizations of those needs and issues; recommends programs or
legislations to the City Council to promote and ensure equal rights
and opportunities to and for women in the City; promotes education on
issues regarding matters involving the needs of women; provides
outreach information and education that empowers women to achieve
self-sufficiency and self-esteem’ maintains an acitve liason with
groups, organization, agencies, and individuals in regards to issues
related to women.
The Armenian National Committee-Glendale Chapter advocates for the
social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian
American community and promotes increased civic participation at the
grassroots and public policy levels. It is the voice of this vibrant
community, which seeks to advance and enrich Glendale.
