IT IS STILL EARLY TO RESUME OPPOSITION RALLIES, LEVON ZURABIAN SAYS

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 18, NOYAN TAPAN. The atmosphere formed in the
country in consequence of the March 1 events is a serious obstacle
for settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in favor of Armenia. Levon
Zurabian, the Coordinator of the Armenian National Congress (ANC),
stated at the November 18 press conference mentioning that "the
forces seizing the power" do nothing to remove the barrier separating
them from society. Therefore, as he emphasized, ANC demands that the
authorities immediately acquit and release the 75 political prisoners,
stop economic and administrative persecutions towards opposition
supporters, undertake steps to keep the Armenian people away from
the consequences of the world economic crisis.
L. Zurabian said that the decision to stop the rallies for two months
not to hinder the authorities has justified itself. According to
him, the Nagorno Karabakh settlement negotiations process has indeed
entered an active stage and the problem is likely to be solved in
December. According to L. Zurabian, in that context it is still early
to make a decision on resuming the rallies: they should wait for the
further development of the events.
