The Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan, received today the
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom
of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Armenia Charles Lonsdale
and the Head of Europe and Central Asia Division at UK Department of
International Development Pauline Hayes.

The Prime Minister highly appreciated the cooperation with the
government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,
and said the programs implemented jointly with the UK Department of
International Development were important for our country. Those were
targeted at the improvement of the institutional system of governance,
reformation of the public sector, expansion of program budgeting,
development of marzes, etc.

Taking into consideration that at the beginning of 2006 Armenia was
included in the list of medium-income countries, and the assistance
policy of the UK Department of International Development is mainly
targeted at the implementation of programs in low-income countries,
the UK Government has decided to suspend the assistance program to
Armenia at the end of 2008.

With this regard Charles Lonsdale and Pauline Hayes noted that the
cooperation with Armenia does not stop. "We will continue closely
watching the future progress of Armenia. Besides our assistance within
international organizations, the British Embassy in Armenia will uphold
its assistance to the reforms implemented by the Armenian Government,
as well as support the peaceful resolution of the conflicts existing
in the region, including the Nagorno Karabakh conflict," they noted.

During the meeting reference was made to the world economic and
financial crises, the government’s program targeted at softening its
possible impact on Armenia.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
