More than 40% of Armenian territory has been ruined during the Spitak
earthquake in 1988, 21 cities, 342 villages were half destroyed
and 25000 people died, said Edik Barseghyan, the director of Rescue
Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations during a conference on
Spitak earthquake today. "20 years have passed since the earthquake
and we should conclude what we have done during that disaster and
what we can to now. Then we were not ready to meet such challenges,
then there was not either a Ministry of Emergency Situations or a
rescue service," said the director.
Currently there are certain plans of activities in rescue service and
in local self governing bodies. Trainings were organized and conducted
in Gyumri on1-2 December. Andrey Ligoshin, of the Ministry of Emergency
Situations of Russian Federation said that it was remarkable that
Armenia has a rescue service which corresponds to international
standards.
