A member of the Azerbaijani delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly
of the Council of Europe (PACE) accused Armenia of pursuing monoethnic
policy.

"We should seriously think of developments in Armenia. During hearings
on the elections and 1 March developments in Armenia which was held
at the U.S. Helsinki Commission, one of congressmen said that he
was terrified of anti-Semitism in Armenia. But it has been several
years that we are speaking about Armenia’s mono-ethnic policy as a
result of which 100 thousands of Azerbaijanis were forced to leave
their lands. We said that it is a dangerous tendency for all Europe,"
Member of the Azerbaijani PACE Delegation Ganira Pashayeva said at
a winter session.

Discussions were held on Armenia’s fulfillment of the Resolution 1609
and 1620 at the PACE winter session on Jan. 27.

The PACE decided to allow the Monitoring Committee to further assess
Armenia’s fulfillment of commitments until the spring session in a
bid to help Armenia to improve the situation.

Armenian opposition launched mass demonstrations in the center of
Yerevan on Feb. 20, 2008 as a protest against the presidential
election held in February and Serzh Sarkisyan’s victory. The
demonstrators’ clash with the law enforcement agencies on March 1
claimed lives of tens of people and left 265 injured. Armenian is
required to release political prisoners and to investigate March
events impartially. Armenia has not yet fulfilled the demands.

Pashayeva said that Armenia pursues ethnic cleansing policy against
Azerbaijanis in the occupied lands. "International organizations
did not hold a strict position against official Yerevan which killed
thousand of innocent people. It is resulted in Armenia’s using force
and violence against its civilians," she said.

The MP stressed that at present the Armenian Armed Forces’ snipers
kill civil Azerbaijanis who work at their own lands in the occupied
Azerbaijani territories. They deliberately commit arson in the occupied
Azerbaijani territories.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
