YEREVAN, February 4 (Itar-Tass) — A criminal case has been opened over
the murder of Armenia’s deputy police chief, Colonel Gevork Mgerian.
An unidentified attacker shot Mgerian dead on the stairway landing
in front of his apartment in a residential building in Yerevan. The
police official was returning home. The gunman escaped.
Police officials led by Major-General Alik Sarkisian arrived at the
scene of the attack. Forensic specialists have examined the site.
Mgerian turned 33 on November 26. Over the past few years he was
presidential aide, supervised reforms of the road police and the
legal system and led a presidential group for the monitoring of
anti-corruption activities. On July 2 last year Armenia’s president
appointed him deputy chief of the police force under the national
government. He was in charge of the passport and visa department.
