YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 6, NOYAN TAPAN. Prior to adoption of Resolution 1643
by the PACE, the Armenian oppostion was guided by the Lenin’s
principle: "to come to power at the cost of the state’s defeat". The
chairman of "National Agreement" party Aram Harutyunian made this
statement at the February 6 press conference. In his words, the
opposition – in the person of the Armenian National Congress (ANC)
considered as an achievement the fact that the word "political
prisoner" was included in the December 17 statement of the PACE
Monitoring Committee. Now, according to him, it is natural that
Resolution 1643 will be considered by the oppositionists as a defeat.

The head of "National Agreement" expressed an opinion that the
opposition should change its tactics, otherwise it will suffer the same
fate as "Justice" bloc. In order to avoid disintegration, the ANC
should start dialog with authorities without any preconditions. "I
would also advise the opposition not to generate tension at the rally
on March 1," he said, adding that the tragic page of March 1, 2008,
should be closed. According to A. Harutyunian, the force led by Levon
Ter-Petrosian should not have a hope that it is possible to carry out a
revolution by capitalizing on the mistakes of the current authorities
or with the help of outside forces. He said that no one is going to
surrender Karabakh.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
