ACCORDING TO GURGEN SARGSYAN, ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK ALSO SHOWS INTEREST IN IRAN-ARMENIA RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 17, NOYAN TAPAN. Receiving the Head of the Transport
and Communication Unit of the Central Asia and Western Department of
the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Hong Vang on February 16, the Armenian
Minister of Transport and Communication Gurgen Sargsyan underlined
the importance of constructing a North-South road-transport corridor
which will ensure transit transportation of goods, in addition to
Armenia-Georgia road-transport communication.
According to spokeswoman for the minister Susanna Tonoyan, speaking
about the opportunities of constructing an Iran-Armenia railway,
G. Sargsyan said that the Asian Development Bank also shows interest
in this project.
H. Vang said that the technical studies on construction of the
North-South corridor have been included in 2009 programs of ADB,
and the bank has already announced its decision to allocate a one
million dollar grant with this aim. In his words, the results of the
tender for the project advisor are currently being summarized. The
advisor will start its work from mid April. As regards financing the
construction of the corridor, the ADB’s representative proposed using
a multi-stage version.
